Cermet's produces and sells ZnO wafers. The wafers are grown as a bulk single crystal from a patented melt process. The melt growth technique produces ZnO crystals of very high quality in a much shorter duration of time than existing techniques. This approach also has a lower cost than other techniques. Cermet is the only company in the industry to employ melt growth for ZnO production.

ZnO is well suited for such device applications as power devices, UV detectors, and emitters. Various applications call for electrical properties of ZnO ranging from semiconducting to semi-insulating. For example, high power devices rely on semi-insulating substrates to isolate the active layers so that parasitic current and cross-talk are minimized. The electrical behavior of ZnO can be tailored to accommodate such needs

In addition, ZnO has a 2% lattice mismatch to GaN, much less than the lattice mismatch of more commonly used Sapphire and SiC substrates. When combined with the low cost, high volume production provided by Cermet, ZnO is ideal for use as a substrate for GaN epi growth.
