| The market for Gallium Nitride devices has been grown quickly, up 221% since 1999 to 1.35 billion. By 2007, the market for all GaN devices is expected to increase to $4.5 billion (according to market research from Strategies Unlimited). This growth is due to the many appliations that GaN and other similar advanced compound semiconductors are well suited for. Cellular bandstations require high frequency microelectronics to meet the desires of higher and higher bandwidth. GaN handily provides better performance in areas of high speed, linearity heat dissipation that Si solutions cannot. Substituting shorter wavelength emitters such as GaN blue lasers for the current lasers in DVD electronics can quadruple the amount of data that can be stored. High brightness LEDs offer high efficiency and long lifetimes. They are already finding popular use in automobiles, traffic lights, and displays. Solid state lighting is predicted to displace incandescant bulbs, which will lead to worldwide energy savings. A 10% reduction of global electricity is considered obtainable in 20 years. | Next > Substrates | ||||
